How to crack GATE | Prepare for GATE Entrance Exam

GATE is a national level entrance exam conducted yearly. It is jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc), Bangalore and the seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India.

The exam is mandatory for - i. Engineering, technology, and architecture students looking forward to pursuing a masters’ and doctoral program from renowned colleges like IITs; and
ii. Government of India PSU job aspirants.

In addition to 23 IITs and 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), most of the premium engineering colleges accept the GATE score.


GATE 2020 Exam
IIT Delhi has recently released the notification for the conduct of GATE 2020 on February 1, 2, 8 & 9 in two sessions. 

Candidates can apply online at gate.iitd.ac.in from September 3 to 24, 2019. 

The exam will be held in 25 disciplines including the newly-added discipline of Biomedical Engineering.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A candidate with any one of the many degrees is eligible to appear for the exam. For instance, BE, BTech, BPharma, graduation in engineering or architecture, BSc (Research), etc. 

MSc, MA, MCA or equivalent master's degree in science, mathematics, statistics or computer sciences or integrated post BSc master's degree in engineering or technology are also valid. 

  • Final year students of the aforementioned courses are also eligible to apply. 
  • No age limit
  • Apart from Indian nationals, students of Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E), if they fulfill the minimum educational qualification

GATE Exam Pattern 

  • Mode - Online (Computer Based Test)  
  • Duration - 180 minutes
  • Questions - 65
  • Sections - General Aptitude (GA) and subject selected by the candidate
  • Type of questions - Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT)
    Design of questions - Recall, Comprehension, Application, Analysis, and  Synthesis
  • Total Marks - 100

Marking Scheme 

  • Questions carry 1 or 2 marks 
  • 1/ 3 mark will be deducted for 1 mark questions
  • 2/ 3 mark will be deducted for 2 marks questions
  • Zero marks for unattempted questions
  • Negative marking: Only MCQ questions will have negative marking. No negative marking for Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions 

Candidates qualifying the GATE Exam are called for counseling by respective institutes. 

Preparatory Tips

  • It is important to consider the exam syllabus. Understand the exam pattern, prepare notes and make a good strategy. 
  • Take mock tests.
  • Solve the last five-year question papers
